NFC is a wireless communication technology that allows devices, like smartphones, to exchange information when they are very close to each other, usually within a few centimeters. It relies on electromagnetic fields for communication.
To activate an NFC chip using a phone, the phone needs to have an NFC feature built-in, which is quite common in modern smartphones. When the user brings their phone close to an NFC chip, the phone's NFC antenna generates a radio frequency field. This field powers the NFC chip.
Once the NFC chip is powered, it can exchange information with the phone. The NFC chip contains data, such as a website link, a payment transaction, or contact details. When the chip comes within range of the phone's NFC antenna, the two devices establish a connection.
Once connected, the NFC chip sends its stored data to the phone, or the phone can write data to the NFC chip. This transfer of information happens securely and quickly, often in just a fraction of a second. For example, the NFC chip could transfer a website link to the phone, which can then open the link in a web browser.
